When I rub shoulders with folks who have been serving in children’s ministry for forty years or more, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Nietzsche said it first, but Eugene Peterson reframed the phrase for Christ-followers, 'A long obedience in the same direction.' There are so many who have held to that long obedience regarding children’s ministry, however, there are most certainly many others who require a bit more nudge and nurture.

Recruiting volunteers is just one step in building a joy-filled ministry, but the real thrill happens when that joy continues to grow and overflow. Volunteers who feel loved, supported, and equipped not only stick around but become enthusiastic ambassadors for the mission. So, let’s take a minute to consider how you can sustain that joy and keep your team thriving over the long haul.

1. Care and connect

At the heart of a joyful team is authentic relationship. Your volunteers aren’t just filling roles—they’re people with stories, struggles, and wins. Take time to know them personally, celebrate their milestones, and walk alongside them in prayer.

Pro Tip: Pair new volunteers with seasoned ones. This mentoring relationship builds trust, fosters encouragement, and creates a culture where everyone feels valued.

2. Set them up for success

Few things sap joy faster than confusion or being overwhelmed. Equip your team with clear expectations, practical tools, and hands-on training so they feel confident and ready to serve.

Pro Tip: Keep training interactive! Use role-playing, visual aids, and real-life examples. Regularly check in to share tips and celebrate successes.

3. Keep the big picture front of mind

When volunteers see how their role fits into God’s bigger picture, it ignites their purpose. Share the 'why' behind your ministry at every opportunity. Celebrate what God is doing and remind them they’re a vital part of it.

Pro Tip: Tell stories of impact—a child’s first prayer, a breakthrough moment, or a family’s journey with Christ. These moments connect your team to the eternal significance of their work.

4. Cultivate gratitude

Gratitude isn’t just a kind gesture; it’s a joy-sustaining powerhouse. Regularly thank your volunteers in ways that feel personal and meaningful. From handwritten notes to spontaneous shoutouts, let them know their work matters.

Pro Tip: Host a yearly volunteer appreciation night. Make it special with testimonies, prayer, and even a few laughs—like a blooper reel from the year’s events!

5. Foster fun and friendship

Joy isn’t just for the kids—your team needs it too! Create spaces for laughter, connection, and renewal. Whether it’s a coffee meetup or an epic game night, these moments of fellowship strengthen your team.

Pro Tip: Sprinkle fun into your team meetings. Kick off with a goofy icebreaker, or end with a snack potluck. It’s amazing how laughter can bond a group.

6. Be proactive about burnout

Burnout is the joy-stealer we all need to watch for. Keep an eye on your team’s workload and create systems where they can voice when they’re feeling stretched. Sometimes, a short break can bring long-term joy.

Pro Tip: Create a 'sub list' of people who can step in temporarily when someone needs rest. Knowing they’re not alone can make all the difference. Additionally, consider having volunteers sign on for terms so that you can give them time to evaluate their service and life balance.

7. Anchor everything in prayer

True joy is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Prayer is where that joy is renewed, restored, and multiplied. Pray for your team, with your team, and invite your volunteers to pray for each other.

Pro Tip: Form a prayer group within your team. Knowing someone is interceding for them lifts spirits and deepens bonds.

Overflowing joy

When we nurture care, gratitude, and connection, joy doesn’t just survive—it flourishes. Your volunteers will carry that joy into their roles, their relationships, and every interaction with kids and families. By building a ministry rooted in love and anchored in Jesus, you’re not just sustaining joy—you’re creating an environment where it overflows.
