The other day, I realized I was humming a song called 'Joy Trek,' that went something like:

We’re on a joy trek

Joy trek for Jesus

We’re on a walk

Through time and space…

And then I realized it was from one of the first VBS I had ever attended. So, I searched it online. It was a VBS in 1989! This song was embedded in some level of consciousness for almost 35 years. How wild is that?

Music can have a positive impact on learning and spiritual development in so many amazing ways. While these things can vary from person to person, here are several ways that music impacts us for the better:

1. Mood and Motivation

  • Music has the power to influence mood and emotions. Upbeat and energetic music can help create a positive and motivated learning environment, making it more enjoyable and engaging.

Try: Playing upbeat songs as kids enter the classroom to create a welcoming environment

2. Memory Enhancement

  • Certain types of music have been associated with improved memory performance.

Try: God Rocks! Scripture Songs to help kids remember key Bible verses.

3. Reducing Stress and Anxiety

  • Music has a calming effect and can help reduce stress and anxiety levels. Lower stress levels contribute to a more conducive learning environment, as excessive stress can impair cognitive function.

Try: Little Worship Company: Beautiful Day Music - a collection of gentle worship songs accompanied by beautifully filmed videos, perfect for calming little ones.

4. Focus and Concentration

  • Instrumental music or music with a steady beat can aid concentration and focus by providing a consistent background noise that helps drown out distractions. This can be particularly helpful in environments with external disturbances.

Try: Playing quiet instrumental worship music while you give kids space to pray.

5. Enhancing Creativity

  • Some people find that certain types of music stimulate creativity. Background music, especially without lyrics, may help individuals think more creatively and generate new ideas.

Try: Playing music during craft time as you chat about what you've been learning.

6. Rhythm and Movement

  • Music with a strong rhythm can synchronize with body movements and may enhance physical activities. This synchronization can contribute to a more efficient and coordinated learning experience, especially in tasks involving motor skills.

Try: Cheeky Pandas: Dance With Herbie - learn some cool dance moves as you worship along with the Cheeky Pandas!

7. Establishing routine

  • Using music as part of a routine, such as playing a specific playlist while studying, can signal to the brain that it's time to focus. Over time, this association can help create a productive study or learning environment.

Try: Playing the same song each lesson when it's time to tidy up.

8. Cultural and Emotional Connection

  • Music can be a powerful tool for cultural and emotional connection. Incorporating music from different cultures or relating it to historical events can make learning more immersive and memorable.

Try: Including a song about the Bible story or people you're learning about.

What’s playing in your mind right now? What songs do you want on repeat in the minds of your kids in 20, 30, 50 years? Now’s the time to set the playlist and make those tunes matter.
